Should My Trust be the Beneficiary of My IRA?

Have you ever been asked whether a client’s trust should be named the beneficiary of his or her IRA (Individual Retirement Account or Individual Retirement Annuity)?  It’s a good question, since the trust offers estate planning opportunities, including control of who gets what when.  But naming a trust the beneficiary of an IRA also presents challenges, including perhaps, accelerating how quickly the inherited IRA must be paid out, and as a result, how quickly it will be taxed.  This presentation explores both the opportunities and challenges of naming a trust the beneficiary of an IRA and offers some alternative planning strategies.
